What is the difference between a natural and an artificial string harmonic?

A natural harmonic is produced by lightly touching an open string at one of its nodal points (octave, fifth, fourth, third…) without pressing it down — the player only needs one finger. An artificial harmonic requires two fingers on the same string: one stopping the string firmly at a chosen pitch, the other touching it lightly a fixed interval above (most commonly a perfect fourth) to sound a higher partial of the stopped pitch. Notation shows the touched point as a diamond notehead; artificial harmonics show the stopped pitch as a normal notehead and the touched pitch as a diamond above it, joined by a shared stem.

Why is the perfect-fourth grip the default for artificial harmonics?

Touching a perfect fourth above the stopped pitch produces the fourth partial of the stopped fundamental, which sounds two octaves higher than the stopped pitch. This grip is mechanically the most comfortable for players (the hand position mirrors a standard fourth on the fingerboard), produces a reliable, ringing harmonic on all four orchestral strings, and is the convention every conservatory string player learns first. Other grips (fifth, third, minor third) reach different partials but are progressively harder to execute cleanly and are reserved for specific musical effects.

How does double-bass harmonic notation differ from the other strings?

The double bass is a transposing instrument: it sounds one octave lower than written. For harmonics this matters twice over — both the stopped pitch and the touched pitch are written one octave above their sounding pitches. The trainer exposes this explicitly with a "Show pitch as" toggle (sounding vs written) so composers can practise both conventions: thinking in sounding pitches when designing the harmonic effect, and reading written pitches when working from a score. The C-string extension (when present) extends the range down to C1 sounding / C2 written; the trainer covers both standard four-string and C-extension configurations.
