Hand-stopping was the historical fix; modern editors usually flag these notes.

What does "horn in F alto" versus "horn in F basso" mean?

The alto group covers crooks above F (C alto, B alto, B♭ alto, A, A♭, G, F♯). The middle range is the modern F horn. The basso group covers crooks below F (E, E♭, D, D♭, C basso, B basso, B♭ basso, A basso). Ambiguous keys (C, B, B♭, A) take the alto or basso suffix to disambiguate octave.
