soft, tender or gently rounded in manner; write weich in full
How is weich played?
Shape the indicated sound with a soft, yielding or rounded quality. This can involve cushioned onsets, warm tone or pliant phrasing, but the exact target follows the instrument and attached words. Weich does not itself prescribe tempo, dynamic, mute, legato or an exact equivalent to dolce, doux, zart or innig. Mahler’s combinations with gesungen and ausdrucksvoll, alongside separate dynamics and mute notation, show that these properties remain independent.
How does weich sound?
The listener hears a mellow, pliant, softened tone with no hard edges.
In context
German weich means soft or tender and, adverbially, softly or gently. Mahler prints the word in full in phrases such as “sehr weich gesungen” and “weich und ausdrucksvoll”, where the added words define singing and expressive qualities separately. No general abbreviation met the evidence threshold.
