linear movement of voices through harmony

What is it?

Voice leading is the way individual musical lines move through and across vertical sonorities or chords.

What does it do?

Treat every part as a melodic line in its own right, not just a note stacked inside a chord, and give each line a convincing path through the changing harmony. In practice that means favouring stepwise (conjunct) motion over leaps, holding common tones between chords, and keeping the voices independent — which is why the old prohibitions on parallel fifths and octaves exist: parallels collapse two lines into one. Sometimes the lines come first and the harmony falls out of them; sometimes a harmonic progression sets the problem and you find the smoothest route through it. The thinking runs from Zarlino and Fux's species discipline through Jeppesen's Palestrina studies. Heinrich Schenker pushed it furthest, arguing that counterpoint simply is the study of voice leading and distinguishing strict species exercises from the freer voice leading of real composition — an influential and illuminating view, though one theory of tonal structure among several rather than the last word.

Not a single effect but a quality: independent lines that nonetheless belong together, so the chords sound like the by-product of directed melodic motion rather than blocks shoved side by side.

Voice leading is often reduced to avoiding parallels, keeping common tones, and choosing the shortest path between chords. Those rules may be useful, but they are only a simplified surface of a much older contrapuntal way of thinking.

In context

voice leading: how independent melodic lines move through harmony — favouring stepwise motion, keeping common tones, avoiding parallels to preserve independence. Rooted in Zarlino/Fux species counterpoint and Jeppesen's Palestrina work; framed most strongly (but as one theory among several) by Schenker, for whom counterpoint is the study of voice leading.
