How is tasti muti played?

Lower the indicated keys slowly and lightly enough to lift their individual dampers without making the hammers strike, then hold them for the written duration. A separately played note, chord, voice or inside-piano action can excite harmonically related open strings and produce sympathetic resonance. The technique is selective: unlike the damper pedal it does not release all dampers, and unlike sostenuto it prepares keys before the sounding event. The words do not guarantee one volume, overtone set or duration.

How does tasti muti sound?

Sympathetic resonance from silently depressed keys.

In context

Tasti muti is an Italian silent-key instruction, not a request for ordinary attacked notes to sound muted. Its held keys make no attack but leave selected strings available for sympathetic vibration when another event excites them. The exact keys, excitation, duration and pedal state remain separately notated. No proposed text form received three independent direct expansions of the complete phrase, so tasti muti remains written out.
