How is staccatissimo played?

Make the marked note more clipped and separated than ordinary staccato, leaving proportionally more silence without assuming one universal fraction of its written value. Modern scores may use a wedge or pike, the full word, or staccatiss.; the wedge is a graphic sign, not the abbreviation itself. In older notation dots, dashes and wedges were not always distinguished consistently, so edition and context matter. String players may use a very short stopped or rebounding gesture, but that physical solution is instrument- and passage-specific rather than part of the word’s fixed definition.

How does staccatissimo sound?

Notes sound pointed and extremely brief, almost like dry taps surrounded by silence.

In context

Musicca, Stone’s notation manual and an independent articulation table directly attest staccatiss. The sources agree on a superlative form of staccato but do not justify a fixed maximum silence or universal quarter-value formula. Dorico classifies staccatissimo with duration articulations, while historical notation cautions against treating every wedge or dot as semantically identical. It is a general technique marking rather than one composer’s signature.
