Solo aria: meaning and use in music

Solo aria means air only: foreground breath noise and suppress the normal sustained instrumental tone; write the phrase in full.

How is solo aria played?

Blow through, into or across the instrument using the locally appropriate fingering and embouchure while preventing the ordinary tone generator from settling into a normal pitch. The tube and fingering can still colour the noise or leave a resonant pitch trace, so air only does not mean acoustical silence. Preserve rhythm and dynamics, and do not add key clicks, vocalization or multiphonics unless specified.

How does solo aria sound?

Air sound without a real tone.

In context

Solo aria explicitly makes air the sounding material. It can overlap with suono d’aria, but the latter names an air sound whose pitch content may range more freely; senza suono instead negates the ordinary sound without naming one positive mechanism. No exact text form met the three-source threshold, so solo aria remains written out.
