How is smorzare played?

End or shorten the sound after its attack by touching a string, releasing the piano keys or sustain pedal carrying it, or damping a cymbal or vibraphone bar with the hand, mallet or mechanism. On the same resonant object this can function opposite lasciar vibrare, and the local notation determines how cleanly and how soon the sound ends. The related gerund smorzando is a phrase-level direction in which intensity diminishes toward extinction and slowing may accompany it, but it is not automatically the same instruction as this physical damping infinitive. Sources expand smorz. as smorzando or smorzato, not the exact headword smorzare, so the abbreviation is not transferred.

How does smorzare sound?

The sound fades, deadens or is choked off, replacing a free ringing decay with a muffled, shortened one.

In context

Italian smorzare means to attenuate, damp or extinguish a sound or oscillation. Its relationship to smorzando explains the shared image of extinction, but grammar and musical scope differ: smorzando governs a dying-away process, whereas smorzare here names a damping action on a resonance; no exact textual abbreviation for smorzare met the three-source rule.
