How is senza suono played?

Withhold the normal sustained instrumental tone and follow the remaining fingering, breath, rhythm or action indicated by the score. The audible result may be breath noise, an unvoiced attack or near silence, depending on context; the words alone do not select one technique or require zero acoustic output. Keep separately notated rhythm, dynamics and key actions, and consult a legend where the intended residual sound is unclear.

How does senza suono sound?

Sound without a real tone, or pure air sound.

In context

Senza suono is broader and more context-dependent than solo aria or suono d’aria: those positively identify air as material, whereas senza suono negates the ordinary sound or tone. It is also distinct from senza lingua, which removes tongue articulation but can retain a normal pitch. No exact abbreviation met the three-source rule, so senza suono remains written out.
