How is senza lingua played?
Start the sound with coordinated air and embouchure, or connect it from the preceding note, without using the tongue to release each onset. Retain the written pitches, rhythm, dynamics, slurs and note lengths; the phrase removes a tonguing action but does not automatically require an air-only sound, inaudible onset or continuous legato. Instrument, register and context determine how soft or clear the air attack can be.
How does senza lingua sound?
Sound or action without tongued attack.
In context
Senza lingua is the local opposite of con lingua and describes attack production rather than one timbre. It must remain separate from senza suono and solo aria, which concern the presence or balance of pitched sound. No exact textual candidate obtained three independent direct expansions, so the phrase remains written out.
