How is secco played?
Shape the attack and release so the sound stops cleanly and does not bloom into sustained resonance. On piano this commonly involves little or no damper pedal and a controlled release; on percussion or strings it may require damping, a short stroke or prompt stopping of the vibration. Read secco as a sound-quality and articulation request rather than a universal mechanical recipe. Recitativo secco is a separate historical term for continuo-accompanied recitative.
How does secco sound?
A short, abrupt sound that stops cleanly with no ring or after-resonance.
In context
Secco is Italian for dry and, as a musical direction, calls for a short, very staccato or non-resonant result. It may imply sparse resonance or prompt damping, but does not by itself specify one implement, playing area or pedal mechanism. The constructed secc. did not receive three direct expansions of this exact headword, so secco remains written out.
