without mute (French); write the phrase in full
How is sans sourdine played?
Play without a mute. If a string bridge mute or brass mute is already in use, remove it with enough time before the entry; if no mute has yet been used, the phrase can confirm the unmuted state. This is the counterpart to avec sourdine and corresponds functionally to German ohne Dämpfer or Italian senza sordino only in the relevant instrument context. Continue unmuted until a new explicit mute instruction.
How does sans sourdine sound?
The natural, open string sound returns: the brightness and upper partials come back, the tone regains its edge and projection, and the section moves forward out of the muted distance.
In context
French sans sourdine means without mute and can either cancel an existing mute or state that none is wanted from the outset. Strings and brass require different removal actions, and the resulting sound may regain resonance or upper partials without being guaranteed louder, brilliant or more projecting. Musicca directly expands sans sourd., but the retained score uses do not supply the two additional independent direct expansions required here, so the full French phrase remains public.
