- Abbreviation
- salt.
How is saltando played?
Let the bow rebound to produce a light, lively off-string or springing articulation. Depending on tempo, dynamics, slurs, dots and the score legend, the result may be realised as spiccato, sautillé, jeté, ricochet or another related bounce. It can create quick staccato notes or an arpeggiated group, but saltando alone does not prescribe either effect, a fixed rebound count or several notes in one bow.
How does saltando sound?
Light, bouncing staccato or arpeggio effect.
In context
Saltando is a broad bouncing-bow direction rather than one universally fixed mechanism. Primary and specialist sources attest salt.; a string dictionary notes that the actual stroke may fall into several neighbouring categories according to notation and style. Read local bowings and the score legend, and use ordinario or a new stroke indication to leave the effect.
