- Abbreviation
- pp
How is pianissimo played?
Play distinctly softer than p while maintaining enough support for the tone, pitch, rhythm and line to remain intentional. The doubled dynamic letter pp marks a relative level, so its acoustic result changes with the instrument, register, room, texture and the rest of the work. Additional p letters can push the written extreme further, but they do not create equal mathematical steps and cannot override physical playability. Pianissimo often serves hushed, intimate or distant music, yet the dynamic alone does not prescribe one tone colour.
How does pianissimo sound?
A very quiet, often delicate or distant sound, hushed below ordinary soft playing.
In context
Trinity College London and the Open University print pp for pianissimo and define it as very soft, while Gerou–Lusk places it below p among the common dynamic levels. SMuFL treats the repeated p letters as standard music-text glyph combinations. Each further p asks for a quieter relative degree, but the performer must scale that request to the available sound and to the contrasts the whole passage still needs.
