How is perdendosi played?

Let the passage withdraw toward distance or disappearance by reducing dynamic intensity and allowing tone, resonance and musical energy to ebb. Historical usage often places it near the end of a phrase, section or movement; some sources and composers also imply a slight rallentando, while others achieve the effect in strict time, so follow the actual notation. Diminuendo names the dynamic decrease more neutrally, calando commonly combines softening with relaxation, and morendo or smorzando carry their own dying or extinguishing character. Perdendosi can overlap with them without becoming a universal synonym for any one of them.

In context

Grove defines perdendosi or perdendo le forze as losing strength, primarily a gradual diminuendo and in some later usage also a slight rallentando; it cites Beethoven’s Op. 110 and Fourth Symphony as well as Weber and Chopin. Duden stresses gradual weakening, while Larousse describes a continuous fade until the sound disappears and cites Haydn’s Symphony No. 60. The compact form perd. is independently attested by the Oxford Dictionary of Abbreviations and historical music dictionaries, although spelling the full word avoids confusion with perdendo.
