Pedalglissando: meaning and use in music

Pedalglissando is a harp pedal slide: pluck a string, then move its pitch-class pedal while it rings so the pitch changes by one or more semitone steps; write the term in full.

How is Pedalglissando played?

Sound the specified harp string and, while it continues to vibrate, move the corresponding pedal through the notated flat, natural or sharp position. The mechanism retunes every string of that pitch class, so the score must identify the sounding string, pedal path and timing and must account for any other ringing strings of the same letter name. The effect is a mechanically stepped pitch change with pedal noise, not a normal finger sweep across many strings and not use of the piano sustain pedal.

How does Pedalglissando sound?

On the harp, a rippling run that lands only on the pre-set notes of a scale or chord; on the timpani, a smooth audible slide of the drum's pitch from one note to another.

In context

Pedalglissando names a harp technique in which the player retunes a sounding string by moving its pedal. It must be distinguished from an ordinary harp glissando, whose scale or chord is fixed by a pedal setting before a finger sweeps the strings, and from a timpani portamento or piano pedal direction. No proposed textual shortening received three direct expansions of this exact German headword, so Pedalglissando remains written out.
