How is ohne Ton played?

Suppress the ordinary stable tone and realize the remaining gesture according to the instrument and surrounding notation. In a wind part this may mean audible breath through a fingering, an unvoiced attack or another noise-based action; the words alone do not choose among them or require complete silence. Keep rhythm, dynamics, key actions and breath contour as notated, and consult a legend where the intended residual sound is unclear. Do not assume that ohne Ton is mechanically identical to nur Luft on every instrument.

How does ohne Ton sound?

Noise or air sound without clear pitch.

In context

Ohne Ton describes the absence of a normal tone rather than positively specifying one production method. It can overlap with air-only playing, but may also qualify articulation, fingering or gesture whose remaining noise is defined elsewhere. It therefore remains separate from nur Luft, Luftgeräusch and Klappengeräusch unless the score equates them. No proposed text form had three independent direct expansions of the exact phrase, so ohne Ton remains written out.
