Offen: meaning and use in music

Offen means open: restore the locally relevant brass state, commonly ending a stopped or covered horn passage; write the word in full.

How is offen played?

Return from the preceding stopped, partly stopped, hand-covered or other locally closed treatment to the score’s open state. For horn, this normally means releasing the seal while retaining the ordinary supportive right-hand position; it does not mean removing the hand entirely. Vienna Symphonic Library documents o for open and + for stopped horn, but those are graphic signs whose use depends on the score legend, not text abbreviations. Offen cancels only the relevant local modification and does not itself prescribe forte, a new articulation or one tone colour.

How does offen sound?

open, free sound

In context

Professional horn notation sources pair offen with gestopft and the open-circle sign with the stopped + sign. The baseline meaning—play open, especially in horn and brass—therefore remains, now qualified as a contextual return rather than a universal instruction to remove every mute or change every parameter. No proposed textual abbreviation reached three independent direct expansions, and the circle belongs to symbol notation, so offen is written out.
