How is obscur played?
Reduce glare and foreground clarity enough to create a dim or veiled character while preserving the written pitch, rhythm, articulation and dynamics. Choose the means from the instrument and texture: darker spectral balance, register, voicing, resonance or blend may contribute, but obscur does not require softness, muting, slowness or one acoustic formula. It is related to sombre and Italian oscuro without being interchangeable in every context.
How does obscur sound?
A dim, veiled, indistinct sound — darkness with little definition.
In context
French lexical evidence gives obscur the senses dark, dim, faint or indistinct, while timbre research warns that performers use dark and obscur in different acoustical ways. It is therefore a descriptive colour and atmosphere instruction rather than a codified intensity. Obscur may be less familiar than sombre, but no frequency ranking or standard abbreviation is established here.
