How is morendo played?
Let the sound die away by thinning the tone toward silence; the dynamic fade is central, while the amount of slowing depends on the surrounding tempo language. Like calando and smorzando, morendo is a composite instruction and cannot be realised by slowing alone. It contrasts with allargando, which broadens and grows, and with a plain ritardando, which need not alter dynamics. Its image of music 'as if dying' makes it especially apt at the close of elegiac or tragic movements.
How does morendo sound?
The sound recedes toward nothing, growing softer and slacker until it seems to expire — a hushed, valedictory dissolution.
In context
The close of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, 'Pathétique', is a celebrated example: the Adagio lamentoso finale ends morendo as descending string lines sink into low strings and bassoons until the music expires, overturning the triumphant-finale tradition. The term belongs to the Italian family of dying-away directions, though Grove foregrounds cadential decrescendo while modern dictionaries often include both softening and slowing. Three independent general reference lists attest mor.; its absence from the consulted notation manual and direct score evidence makes that form attested rather than universal, and moren. lacks sufficient independent support.
