How is mit Besen played?
Use the wire, nylon or otherwise specified brush appropriate to the instrument. On a drumhead, brushes can tap, sweep or circle, producing anything from separate soft attacks to sustained friction noise; on suspended cymbal they can make single strokes, repetitions or rolls with a very quiet metallic result. Choose motion, contact area and pressure from the notation and desired balance. The instruction selects an implement, not automatically a jazz groove, swish, roll, soft dynamic, damping method or one fixed sound.
How does mit Besen sound?
A soft, subdued, airy sound — taps lose their sharp edge and sweeps produce a continuous swish instead of a defined stroke.
In context
Besen are percussion brushes, an implement family used on drums, cymbals and other surfaces. Their fine wires or filaments and the chosen tapping or sweeping motion shape the attack and noise component, but instrument and gesture remain separate parameters. Musicca lists Besen without an exact phrase abbreviation, and no candidate reached three direct independent expansions, so mit Besen remains written out.
