marked, emphasised or accented in context; write markiert in full
How is markiert played?
Bring the marked figure or passage clearly forward through deliberate emphasis. Markiert can affect stress, attack or rhythmic profile according to the surrounding notation; it is related to Italian marcato and French marqué but does not fix one weight or symbol. It lies on the emphatic rather than the smoothly bound side of articulation, yet it does not by itself require separation, a louder dynamic or a tempo change. Treat it as a written passage direction and follow any independent accents, slurs and dynamics.
How does markiert sound?
Firm, emphasised, well-projected notes that stand clearly forward in the texture.
In context
German markiert means marked, emphasised or accented. Schumann prints the word in full in the headings “Lebhaft und sehr markiert” and “Lebhaft, sehr markiert”, where the separate tempo word helps delimit its function. It is a generic direction rather than a composer-specific sign, and no German contraction met the evidence threshold.
