How is lumineux played?
Shape timbre, voicing, articulation and, where relevant, pedalling so the sound projects clarity and radiance without forcing it. Brightness can be influenced by spectral balance, register, dynamics, resonance and instrumentation, so lumineux does not prescribe one technique, loudness or amount of upper-frequency energy. From the late nineteenth century onward, French-language scores often use evocative colour words alongside abstract tempo terms. The word is comparable to Italian luminoso, but the practical result remains local to the score.
