connected or legato in manner; write lié in full

How is lié played?

Join the indicated notes into a continuous legato line without an intended separation. A slur can carry the related action, but its physical meaning is instrument-specific: strings may use one bow, winds or singers one breath or emission, and keyboard players coordinate release and onset. Lié stands opposite détaché in connection, yet it does not itself prescribe dynamic, timbre, tempo or one degree of overlap. Read the complete word, slur and phrase context together.

How does lié sound?

A smooth, singing line in which the notes flow seamlessly into one another.

In context

French lié means tied, linked or connected and is the French equivalent of legato. Debussy prints the full word in phrases such as “doux et lié”; Danhauser expands Leg. as Italian Legato rather than as the French translation. A slur is related graphical notation, not a text abbreviation, so the French headword remains written out.
