How is largamente played?
Open the phrase out so beats, harmony and line have room and weight. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music makes style primary over a specific tempo, and the older Grove dictionary explicitly distinguishes Largamente’s breadth from a required tempo change; Treccani shows why performers may nevertheless hear a slow, Largo-related character. Resolve that tension from the existing tempo, metre, syntax and any separate slowing mark. Do not treat Largamente as an automatic ritardando, as a synonym for Largo, or as permission to lose pulse.
How does largamente sound?
Broad, weighted phrasing with space around the beats — a manner of breadth rather than a fixed slow tempo.
Largamente shares its root with largo, and I did find one page online quietly borrowing largo's 40–60 figure for it — but no dictionary backs that up, and I'm not willing to inherit a number by association alone. What the sources agree on is manner, not speed: largamente asks for breadth and expansiveness in how a passage is played, whatever tempo it happens to be in.
In context
The sources agree on breadth and dignity but not on a universal speed: Oxford calls the word more a performance style than a specific tempo, Grove says it can add breadth without changing tempo, and Treccani relates it to tempo largo. The baseline’s broad, weighted phrasing with space around the beats is therefore retained and sharpened as a contextual manner. A proposed larg. collides with Largo, Larghetto, allargando and other “larg-” terms and lacks sufficient independent evidence for this exact headword, so largamente remains written out.
