How is sordino played?
Sordino names the physical mute used in or at a brass instrument’s bell; in a clear part context, bare sord. can also serve as shorthand for the device or a request to use it. If the score gives no type, a straight mute is the usual classical-brass assumption, but named straight, cup, Harmon/wah-wah, plunger and bucket mutes remain distinct and local house or jazz practice can differ. Do not confuse the device with horn hand-stopping, which uses the hand rather than a separate mute.
How does sordino sound?
Depends on the device: the straight mute acts as a high-pass filter and turns the tone bright, nasal and penetrating; the cup mute veils and rounds it; the Harmon makes it close and buzzy; the plunger gives speech-like and growling colours. Across the board the instrument is quieter and more focused, with a characteristic edge.
In context
Italian sordino is the mute device placed in or at a brass instrument’s bell, with sord. independently expanded by Musicca, Stone and a historical music reference. Sources record masculine sordino/sordini and feminine sordina/sordine forms; actual score usage varies, so the noun is not automatically synonymous with the full instruction con sordino. In classical brass an unqualified mute usually means straight mute, while cup, Harmon, wah-wah and plunger are named when required. Brass mutes appear throughout orchestral repertory associated with composers such as Stravinsky, Copland and Gershwin and across jazz, but construction, type, register and dynamic determine the result rather than one universally quieter, brighter, nasal or veiled colour. A physical mute is not horn hand-stopping (chiuso or gestopft).
