How is senza sordino played?
Remove the active mute from in or at the bell before the unmuted entry, or use the marking to confirm an unmuted state when no mute is currently fitted. Give the player usable time for the physical change and continue unmuted until a new explicit mute direction. On horn, aperto or offen can locally cancel hand-stopping, but hand-stopping is a separate technique rather than another name for removing a physical mute.
How does senza sordino sound?
The full, open brass sound comes back: broader, rounder and more powerful than the muted colour it replaces. The contrast itself is the effect — the lid comes off the section.

Italian senza sordino on brass means without mute and is a standard return after a muted passage; Musicca, Stone and Hugill directly support senza sord.
