Hauchend: meaning and use in music

Hauchend means breathy or breathed: let audible air colour the marked sound without assuming that pitch disappears; write the German word in full.

How is hauchend played?

Adjust the air stream and tone production so breath noise is perceptible alongside or around the intended sound, using an instrument-appropriate embouchure, voicing or attack. The requested balance can range from a lightly aerated pitch to strongly air-dominant sound and must be inferred from dynamics, notation, register and any performance legend. Do not substitute a fixed air percentage, whisper, air-only technique or normal unpitched exhalation unless the score says so.

How does hauchend sound?

airy, breathy tone

In context

Hauchend is a contextual German breath-quality direction. It preserves the possibility of a pitched core and therefore differs from nur Luft or ohne Ton when those explicitly suppress normal tone; it also differs from Klappengeräusch, whose source is mechanical impact, and from flüsternd, which is primarily a whispering character. The result and duration remain local and instrument-dependent. No candidate had three independent direct expansions, so hauchend remains written out.
