How is halb gestopft played?
Move the right hand from the normal playing position toward a partial closure, using ear and response to realize the requested shade. The result is a continuum, not a universal midpoint: hand size, bell, horn side, register and dynamic alter pitch, resistance and spectrum. Compared with fully gestopft, the bell is not sealed and the usual full-stopping compensation cannot simply be applied unchanged. Some pedagogy calls a loosely covered, pitch-lowering position echo horn or half-stopped, but local score definitions take priority. Keep this distinct from half-valving, a partially opened mute and a graphic sign whose legend defines another action.
How does halb gestopft sound?
A colour between open and fully stopped — partly veiled and shaded, with some of the metallic edge of gestopft but softer and less snarling. A gradation rather than a hard switch.
