How is gettato played?
Throw or drop the bow onto the string and let it rebound several times while travelling in one bow direction. The first impact supplies the energy, after which the bounces normally diminish unless the player intervenes. Sources often relate gettato to jeté or ricochet, but notation must still show the intended group, direction and rhythm; it should not be collapsed into ordinary alternating spiccato or the broader label balzato without context.

KTH models the successive impacts as decreasing bow-force peaks, while a performance study of Garth Knox calls the gesture similar to ricochet but less controlled. Write gettato out: neither jeté nor ricochet is a textual abbreviation of the Italian word.
