How is gestrichen played?
Set the string in motion with the bow, normally with the hair unless another instruction changes the implement or contact point. In a score the word can establish ordinary bowed playing or contrast with a plucked passage. It functions much like mit dem Bogen or Italian arco, but the sources do not establish a separate German technical nuance that performers must invent.

Vienna Symphonic Library describes string sound as produced by bowing or plucking and says changes between gestrichen (arco) and gezupft (pizzicato) are written as words. Gerou–Lusk likewise uses arco to cancel pizzicato. Arco is a conventional Italian direction, not a contraction of gestrichen, and no reliable general German short form such as gestr. was identified.
