How is frullato played?
Sustain the written pitch and roll the tongue tip as for a repeated r, or use an uvular flutter when that is more reliable or locally desired. Coordinate air support, embouchure and voicing so the flutter continues without forcing; response varies with instrument, register and dynamic, and double reeds or particular ranges may be less stable. Keep notated rhythm, dynamic and articulation unless the score says otherwise. Tremolo strokes often accompany the text, but they are a graphic channel and are not stored as an abbreviation.
How does frullato sound?
A fast, even tremolo built into a single pitch — the note 'buzzes'. Soft, it glitters; hard and dissonant in the brass it turns coarse and animal, which is exactly why Strauss reached for it.
In context
Frullato names the same broad technique as German Flatterzunge, but its accepted Italian text form is frull.; Flz. and Flt. remain German forms and are not transferred to this headword. The effect ranges from a light shimmer to a coarse growl according to instrument and dynamic, rather than carrying one fixed expressive meaning. Musicca and two independent university studies directly expand frull. to frullato, satisfying the three-source rule.
