How is fortissimo played?
Play with powerful, full sonority at a clear step above f, while keeping articulation, pitch and ensemble balance intact. The doubled dynamic letter ff is an immediate level marking, not two mathematical units of loudness, and its acoustic result changes with instrumentation, register, venue and the surrounding scale. Further f letters can intensify the request, so fortissimo need not be the absolute ceiling of every work. It commonly supports climaxes and full-ensemble passages, but the marking specifies dynamic force rather than one required tone colour.
How does fortissimo sound?
A very loud, powerful sound, forceful above ordinary loud playing.
In context
Fortissimo is the Italian superlative of forte and is conventionally written ff. Trinity College London, the Open University, Treccani and Gerou–Lusk all preserve that pairing, while SMuFL treats repeated dynamic letters as standard music-text glyph combinations. The practical relationship is ordinal and contextual—ff above f—not a promise of an equal decibel step or a universal physical maximum.
