How is forte played?
Play with a strong, projecting sound clearly above the quieter levels around it, while preserving the tone and balance appropriate to the instrument, ensemble and room. Forte anchors the loud side of the familiar p–mp–mf–f sequence, but f in one passage or work need not equal f in another; it means considerably stronger than p in the same context. The conventional score form is the single dynamic letter f, and repeated f letters intensify the request. Because ff or fff may follow, one f should not automatically be treated as the loudest sound physically possible.

In context
Italian forte literally carries the sense strong, and Treccani and current teaching references print f for the musical direction. Music-notation systems treat f as an immediate dynamic letter form that remains in force until a later dynamic changes it; SMuFL supplies a dedicated dynamicForte glyph while the searchable textual identity remains f. Piano and forte are the two basic opposing words in the traditional dynamic vocabulary, and their contrast also survives in the compound name pianoforte.
