How is fließend played?
Let the line move as a connected, unbroken flow. Preserve clear metre, articulation and phrase direction, but avoid hesitation, stiffness and needless holding back; “flowing” describes how the motion proceeds rather than demanding hurry or one fixed BPM. The score may combine fließend with faster, slower, ruhig or an explicit speed limit, which shows that the character can exist across different absolute tempos. Maintain it until another tempo or character instruction.
How does fließend sound?
Natural motion without stiffness or hurry.
Fließend is about the quality of motion, not its speed — DWDS defines it as moving without hesitation, ohne Stocken vor sich gehend. A passage can be fließend at almost any absolute tempo, as long as it never catches or stumbles. That's the whole instruction.
In context
The Internationale Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft translates fließend as flowing or fluent, while Breitkopf’s critical-edition samples print Fließend and Allmählich fließender as complete, gradable instructions. Mahler’s Seventh Symphony then pairs the word with aber nicht zu schnell, demonstrating directly that flow and speed are separate parameters. The result is the baseline’s natural motion without stiffness or hurry. No stable general abbreviation was established, so fließend remains written out.
