How is en dehors played?
Project the marked line through voicing, tone, articulation and balance so that listeners can follow it clearly against the surrounding parts. This does not necessarily mean playing louder; reducing the accompaniment or clarifying the line’s colour may create the required prominence without changing its written dynamic. Treat it as a local instruction for the indicated phrase or figure, with qualifiers such as un peu, bien or très setting the degree. The conventional French phrase is normally written in full.
