How is decrescendo played?
Reduce the sound progressively across the marked span. The instruction may appear as decrescendo, decresc. or a separate closing hairpin; text can be extended by a continuation line when the decrease lasts longer. A hairpin is often used for a compact change, but notation manuals and software treat word, abbreviation and wedge as alternative presentations of the same basic gradual action rather than fixed short-versus-long categories. Decrescendo does not itself mean rallentando: any relaxation of tempo must come from another marking or the passage.
How does decrescendo sound?
Sound that tapers steadily from louder to softer, releasing intensity.
In context
Historical Grove entries already treated decrescendo and diminuendo as convertible in practical effect while listing separate spellings and abbreviations; Grove also points to the long decrescendo in the finale of Schubert’s Ninth Symphony. A current professional notation manual likewise calls the terms interchangeable but prefers diminuendo, while current notation software still offers decresc. and dim. as separate text choices. The safest reading is therefore close modern overlap with room for composer, edition and house-style preference—not a claim that the words have always been universally identical.
