How is chiuso played?
Close the horn bell with the hand to the degree specified by the score or local convention. Full stopping commonly changes resistance, colour and pitch, but the amount and direction of correction depend on horn side, register, instrument and whether a stop mute substitutes; do not apply one automatic half-step fingering to every note. Preserve the written dynamic and articulation. A + sign can mark stopped notes and aperto or an open sign can end them, but graphic symbols are separate from textual abbreviations.
How does chiuso sound?
The pinched, metallic, snarling stopped colour — contained and veiled at low dynamics, hard and cutting when pressed. The Italian counterpart to gestopft and bouché.
In context
Chiuso is the Italian member of the stopped-horn family related to gestopft and bouché. A fully stopped seal, partial hand covering, echo position, straight mute and stop mute are not interchangeable even where their colours overlap. No textual short form had three direct independent expansions of standalone chiuso, so it remains written out.
