How is auf einen Bogen played?
Do not change bow direction inside the marked group. A slur normally shows the span, and the available bow must be distributed so every note fits before the change. One bow often produces legato, but it does not by itself erase internal articulation: portato or staccato marks can separate notes while the bow continues in one direction.

Helbling states that notes grouped by a slur are played auf einen Bogen without a change of direction. Elaine Gould likewise requires one continuous slur for a tremolo or note sequence on one bow, and Vienna Symphonic Library distinguishes legato, portato and staccato executed within one stroke. The German wording is usually part of a fuller instruction such as auf einen Bogen spielen; no stable shortened form was found.
