accented, marked or emphasised; write accentato in full
How is accentato played?
Give the indicated note or passage a clearer or stronger onset or stress so it stands out from its surroundings. The standard accent sign > can produce a related result, but the sign is graphical notation rather than a text abbreviation and need not be substituted for the written word. Accentato is broader than one glyph and is not automatically the more forceful marcato wedge, nor does it prescribe a fixed shortening or dynamic level. It shapes emphasis and rhythmic-dynamic profile without changing the written pitch.
How does accentato sound?
A note that springs forward with a sharper, stronger attack before settling back into the line.
In context
Italian accentato derives from accento and means accented, marked or emphasised. Musicca presents the word in full, and Dorico’s notation documentation separates force articulations from duration articulations and playing techniques. No exact textual contraction met the evidence threshold, so the full word remains the supported notation.
