Largo is one of the few tempo words where the sources actually converge: taken across everything I could verify, it spans roughly 40–60 beats a minute, and that is also the range I use above — Symphony Nova Scotia and a companion source narrow it further, to 45–50, but nothing pushes the outer edges wider than 40–60. Not much disagreement here. The musicologist Clive Brown, who has studied eighteenth- and nineteenth-century performing practice in detail, would still caution against reading even this narrow figure as a fixed law: in his account, words like largo tracked metre, period, composer, and character rather than one absolute speed. I would trust the mood, broad and unhurried, before I trusted the metronome.

Im Kontext

Der zentrale Bezugspunkt ist Dvořák: Symphony No. 9, "From the New World", Largo; Handel: "Ombra mai fù" / "Handel's Largo".
