Score markings

The words and symbols a composer writes into a score to say how the music should be played — dynamics, tempo, articulation, character and instrumental technique.

Score markings are everything a composer adds to the notes themselves to say how the music should sound: how loud, how fast, how the notes are attacked and joined, what character to give them, and which technique an instrument should use. Most of the vocabulary is Italian, with German and French close behind. Below are the main families, each linking to its terms in the lexicon.
