Bhavana / TV2

Date
9 October 2017

TV2 told the story of Bhavana Charugalla, then twelve years old, who had played piano for only a year and had already written around thirty pieces.

The story began as a TV2 Livsstil article and continued with a live appearance on Go’ aften Danmark, one of Denmark’s major evening talkshows, where Bhavana and I were interviewed together in the studio. For composition teaching in Denmark, this was unusually visible: national television attention on a child not merely playing music, but composing it.

Bhavana had begun playing piano in October 2016. After only a few weeks of lessons, I gave her composition as part of the work. She responded immediately to it as a real musical task, not as a decorative side activity.

The attention around the story was important because it made composition teaching visible to a broader Danish audience. It showed that a young student can sometimes begin to think compositionally much earlier than people expect, when the task is real and the musical imagination is taken seriously.
